Dries Louw says LIMS critical for Labs

Dries Louw, Executive Manager of Laboratory Services for ERWAT, has sung the praises of LIMS systems in laboratories at a QBCon industry breakfast session held at Emperors' Palace on 17 October. LOUW'S knowledge of water and wastewater management made it clear that the right skills and highly developed technologies, such as an effective laboratory information management system (LIMS), will aid in ERWAT’s success in improving quality services in the industry and environment. LOUW said that "Effective equipment can be used to obtain results and better analysis."

According to LOUW, the community is becoming more conscious of the chemical analysis of a product, and that laboratory employees and managers need to take this into consideration in order to be "one step ahead" and informed of specific needs.  Synergy in a laboratory can only be accomplished if all departments are continually trained and a part of the information management system. A good system will manage and view each area to measure profitability and effectiveness. Problem and profit areas can then be identified and managed for output optimisation.

QBCon was recently signed by ERWAT to do a User Requirements Specification (URS). QBCon will use the process to identify the requirements within ERWAT, and develop a customary system to satisfy those needs. QBCON Marketing Director Gustav Piater says that the URS is the first step in what he believes will become a long-term relationship with the water supplier.  QBCon have implemented their Lab-i application in a number of well-known laboratories including those of the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and United National Breweries, where they saved significant costs.

QBCon’s Lab-i breakfast sessions are laboratory-industry talk shops aimed at giving the industry a forum to discuss the latest industry developments.
